Let’s Get started

Hi, I’m Juan

I am the son of two Puertorican immigrants who met in Brooklyn NY in the late seventies. Growing up I wasn’t very fond of sports. I started playing handball as a teenager and learned how fun competing could be. When I was in High school I began breakdancing and was immediately hooked. Many times I’d lose myself in the flow of the music and the collective energy. I remember many summer nights where my father would show up at our practices because I’d lost track of time. I later discovered Capoeira and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was immediately drawn to their power, elegance and finesse. Nowadays enjoy watching my kids thrive. I’m taken back by the way they immerse themselves in learning a new skill and enjoying it along the way.

For the last 20 years I’ve worked beside and learned from some of the greatest minds in strength and conditioning. I find amazement in how my clients confidence rises as they become stronger and healthier. Witnessing as they go beyond their expectations and honor their bodies along the way. I don’t put my faith in gimmicks or quick fixes. I don’t believe in fads and understand that much of the fitness industry is heavily saturated with content that can be harmful and lead many down dangerous paths. I believe in the value of dedication and discipline. My love for movement makes me confident I can support you along your path.

My Philosophy

In our practice clients learn how to take control of their own health. A client empowered through education will have a stronger commitment to themselves and the goals they’ve set. The collaborative effort takes them to new height’s as they become in-tune with their body and learn how to honor its needs.

The Process

Everything starts with a discussion around your goals. We discuss not only what you want to achieve but what will that achievement grant you. From there we move on to an assessment that determines movement efficiency and identifies areas that need attention. During the assessment sleep quality, lifestyle, health and training history are all brought to the table so that we have the data we need to create a detailed and thoroughly structured plan. A carefully curated program with clear language is produced that reflects the milestones you will reach along your journey.

The beginning of your training experience focuses on relearning movement patterns and addresses compensations that can increase the risk of injury in or out of the gym. This foundation sets the tone for the work that comes later on as the programming becomes more challenging.

Testimonials

  • Ian Dorrington

“I have been working with Juan for 7 years training both in person and virtually. He is a reliable and an all round great guy!

I have become stronger, healthier and more confident, and am now technically proficient at many barbell and kettlebell exercises.

Juan is very knowledgable about all aspects of fitness including human physiology, performance and diet. He focuses on functional fitness with real world applications: my posture has improved, I can carry heavy things, I am more flexible. Juan has also introduced me to kettlebell sport and competitions.”

  • James Anderson

“I’ve trained with Juan for almost 5 years now - first in person pre-pandemic - then online for 18 months - and now a mix of online and in gym. Whatever the format Juan is a great trainer - he works hard to get the sessions at the right level - doable but demanding - and he’s responsive to feedback about how the sessions can be better. He’s also willing to be flexible. A rigid schedule would be hard for me to maintain due to other commitments - Juan keeps up a good frequency but is willing to be flexible about the timing of specific sessions. Thats a real winning model for me.”

  • Alice Bertoni

“I started training with Juan 6 years ago to prepare for my Strong First instructor certification. The physical requirements of the certification were daunting to me, but Juan helped me so much to improve my technique and strength. I remember how excited I was to share the news with Juan when I passed because it really felt like a joint success.

Juan is an inspiring teacher. He knows so much about movement and the body, he’s a great observer and communicator, and I always leave each session feeling like I learned something valuable.

Juan knows when to push me and he always brings out the best in me.... with his guidance I find myself accomplishing things that I never would have imagined. I feel incredibly lucky to call him my coach.”
